Plain Brown Bird

brown thrasher

a new friend arrived today,

with a song.

Soft golden brown,

tabby striped and spotted

(like all that seem to visit these days –

but this one had wings)

and the voice of an angel –

well more like a choir –

and what a repertoire!

What a gift.

Thank you.

growing season

spiders in the potting shed

what a perfect day

to plant a garden.

But the spiders in the potting shed have other ideas…

they too have been putting down roots.

We all grow,

the trick is to put down roots,

even as we reach out, and up.

The trick is to bloom were we are planted,

and weave our webs of home and love everywhere!

hiding

cardinal in bottle brush tree

A cardinal landed in the bottle brush tree.

Its bright red flowers,

like exuberant daytime fireworks

announced Your arrival.

you may think you are well hidden

because you have chosen your camouflage with care.

But no One is fooled.

The humming birds least of all.

Power Breakfast

big cat meets little kitten by food bowl

The big cat came to breakfast,

uninvited.

entitled?

but He didn’t throw his weight around –

Startled, the kitten started to puff –

but He bent down and touched her nose with his.

and She began to purr.

Then they ate breakfast.

together.

True power is shared.

Attraction

fruit flies on lemon in mug

they say you can attract more flies with honey than vinegar.

i wouldn’t know.

but lemons work.

especially if you forget them in a day old tea cup.

what i forget to do,

or neglect to do,

gains a momentum all on its own,

attracting and feeding

new life.

This may not have been my intention,

but the law of attractions

follows nature’s paths.

What am i attracting into my life?

lessons in mindfulness and community.

(even as i relocate the miniature swarm

and their desired treat,

to the compost heap)

compassion requires action.

Heaven

tomi on a visit

her gnarled and curled hand

wrapped around his soft ear,

as his chin rested on her crochet covered lap.

“I know You will be there,”

she whispered to the Poodle.

“I know there will be dogs in heaven”

Looking me straight in the eye she said,

“Why would God let you fall in love so deeply with someone,

then deny you their company for all eternity?”

Some moments are forever.

i guess it’s time to mow…

Laundry

calico cat on laundry

the calico cat with the heart shaped nose

curled up on the fresh laundry.

i asked her to move.

Folds are only intentional wrinkles,

she purred intently.

ah! i finally i understood!

with each frown,

I become a crumpled hankie –

with each laugh, i become origami!

Humming

hummingbird on fan

in the center of a ceiling fan

was a color wheel,

taped up there

by a young man

as a practical experiment  in

color theory.

red and blue and yellow whirled around like a giant flower.

and suddenly.

Company arrived!

Flying in,

and blessing us all –

a hummingbird!

quickly the fan went off –

only to become a perch –

as our guest stayed for a while.

Learning can be very attractive.

what are you attracting into your life?

crossed paths

instant creek

across my path a new path flowed.

a temporal creek,

a gift from the rain gods to the peepers and creepers.

i stamp my feet,

drumming my presence to all who may be present.

I can not see them, but it would be rude

(and possibly dangerous for us both)

not to knock.

(i am in Florida, home of many snakes)

then barefoot

i enter their path,

if only for a moment.

it is cool and wet.

the soft sand gives gently as i wade thru.

Thank you

i call as my naked foot leaves the water,

Thank you for letting me share your path,

i hope you enjoy sharing mine.
