Guardians

There was once a boy,

Whose arrival into this world was heralded by a chorus of amphibians.

I thought he was the Frog Prince,

For to me he was royalty, and besides,

He loved to dress in green…

(but in truth, that may have had more to do with Peter Pan and Robin Hood

Than anyone aquatic.)

The boy became man,

As happens, if stars align and food is plentiful.

And today,

I learned, as He rescued a series of tiny green tree frogs

That had taken up residence on my minivan,

That he was not the Frog Prince.

For princes, no matter how benign,

Require the allegiance of their subjects…

And He had no such arrangements with the frogs…

Theirs was a relationship of mutual guardianship.

.

We all have to look out for one another.
